Area Data:
The South Cariboo is one of the fastest
growing rural areas in the province. It is
attracting people who are looking for both
recreational properties and full time
residences. The service centre is 100 Mile
House with a population of 2000. Including the
surrounding communities, it serves close to
15,000. The main industries have always been
logging and ranching, although tourism
continues to flourish.
Of the 100's of lakes in the South Cariboo,
none is more sought after or well known as
Green Lake. Named for its clear greenish blue
waters, the Lake itself is quite shallow and
is over 14 km long. This ensures it is quick
to warm up in the early summer and stays warm
into the fall. The surrounding area consists
of rolling hills with large tracts of open
range land. Cattle and wildlife share these
lands with the many visitors and residents who
head off to explore the countless miles of
trails and forestry roads.
The area is abundant with moose and deer.
Limited numbers of black bear, coyote,
squirrels and marmots are also present. The
west end of the lake attracts waterfowl as a
nesting and migratory resting area. Owls and
golden eagles can also be seen.
Recreation:
Green Lake is an outstanding family lake with
some of the best beaches in BC and three
fabulous provincial parks. The lake is
excellent for both summer and winter
recreation. Swimming, boating, fishing,
waterskiing, paddling, and horseback riding
are all popular, and sandy beaches dot the
irregular shoreline The undulating plateau and
highlands around the lake have become a
cross-country skiing and snowmobiling
paradise. Also in the South Cariboo area there
are many great golf courses and fishing lakes.
